I wasn’t always a crazy cat lady, believe it or not. Cats came into my life as a child in Kenya, where my parents adopted Snow White, a beautiful white cat with heterochromia. But otherwise I was always surrounded by dogs until 1993. I hope none of my cats read this, but I do plan to adopt a dog at some point, I just have no idea how to get it pass the Feline Senate Committee governing my home.
I am sure that all those of you out there with four-legged canine family members out there will understand and agree that dogs are furry bundles of love, chaos, and occasional drool stains. They wag their tails at the sight of us, forgive us for literally anything, and somehow find joy in an old sock (explains perhaps the mystery of so many single socks in your drawer?). If there’s one thing I’ve realised, it’s that dogs have life all figured out:
Love Unconditionally
Dogs don’t hold grudges. They don’t care if you stepped on their tail by accident or if you got home an hour late. Imagine forgiving your coworker for eating your sandwich as quickly as your dog forgives you for not sharing the last piece of pizza. The world would be a better place—though probably hungrier.
Live in the Moment
Dogs don’t worry about the stock market or the fact that you left them alone for five whole minutes. They live for now. Chase the squirrel. Roll in the grass. Bark at anything on wheels. Whatever your “now” is, embrace it. Bonus points if it involves snacks.
Celebrate the Small Wins
Found a stick? Best day ever. Finished your report five minutes before the deadline? Tail wag-worthy. Dogs know how to turn even the tiniest victories into a party. You don’t need champagne for this—although they wouldn’t say no to some peanut butter. What’s your peanut butter for the soul?

Don’t Judge
Dogs don’t care if you’re in your pajamas at 2 p.m. or if your singing sounds like a blender full of gravel (unlike cats who will dish out judgement and side-eyes, or even slap you). They’ll love you anyway. So next time you see someone wearing Crocs with socks, channel your inner Golden Retriever and let it slide.
Water Is the Elixir of Life
When’s the last time you drank water with the same enthusiasm as a dog after a walk? They slurp like hydration is a competitive sport. Meanwhile, you’re on your third coffee and wondering why your energy levels rival that of a sloth. Pro tip: Be the dog. Drink the water.
Greet People Like They’re Your Favourite Celebrity
Have you seen how dogs greet their humans? Full sprint, ears back, possibly a leap into the arms. Now imagine doing this to your best friend or partner. OK, maybe tone it down slightly, but still—show people you’re genuinely happy to see them. (Just remember to restrain yourself to no public sniffing.)

Don’t Be Afraid to Look Silly
Ever seen a dog chase its tail or try to catch a treat mid-air and fail spectacularly? They don’t care. They just try again. Next time you’re worried about looking ridiculous, remember: somewhere out there, a Chihuahua is barking at its own reflection, living its best life.
Loyalty Has Limits
Dogs will follow you anywhere, but even they have boundaries. Try to give a dog a bath, and suddenly they’re out. Loyalty doesn’t mean losing yourself. Stick with your pack, but don’t forget to protect your own vibe. Or your fur—if applicable.
Enjoy the Ride
Dogs in cars are the ultimate philosophers. They don’t care where they’re going; they just love the journey. Next time you’re stuck in traffic or waiting in a long line, channel that window-down, ears-flapping, goofy-grin energy. Life’s too short to bark at every red light.
