The Death of Apprenticeship

For much of the twentieth century, parents shared a common dream for their children: study hard, get into a good school, go to university, and find a respectable profession. The advice was well intentioned. Many parents had spent their lives working with their hands and wanted their children to enjoy opportunities they themselves had never had. A university degree became a symbol of progress, achievement, and social mobility.

Along the way, however, something else happened. A subtle hierarchy emerged. University education came to represent success, while vocational education increasingly became viewed as a second choice. Trade schools became the place where students went if they were considered less academic, less ambitious, or less successful. Parents proudly announced that their children had been accepted to university. Far fewer proudly announced that their children had been accepted as apprentices.

The question is why. After all, the electrician who keeps a hospital operating during a power outage, the welder who fabricates critical infrastructure, the machinist who manufactures precision components, and the technician who maintains complex industrial systems possess skills every bit as valuable as those acquired in a lecture hall.

Some countries never fully embraced this hierarchy. Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Denmark continue to regard vocational education as a respected pathway rather than a fallback option. Germany’s dual vocational training system remains one of the most successful examples. Apprentices split their time between classroom instruction and paid workplace training, learning alongside experienced professionals while acquiring recognised qualifications. The system combines theory and practice rather than forcing students to choose between them.

The respect extends beyond the classroom. German vocational qualifications enjoy a level of recognition that many other countries struggle to match. The Meister and Techniker pathways are widely respected professional achievements, and even institutions such as Techniker Krankenkasse reflect a culture that historically attached prestige to technical competence and skilled professions rather than reserving status exclusively for academic credentials.

This brings us back to a question raised in the previous essay: when did we start trusting certificates more than experience? Imagine your heating system fails in the middle of winter, your car develops a mysterious fault, or a critical machine suddenly stops working. Who do you trust: the young technician with an impressive collection of certificates, a polished LinkedIn profile, and a strong social media presence, but limited hands-on experience, or the older technician who has spent twenty years solving similar problems, can identify the fault by sound, explain the cause in plain language, and tell you which solution is most likely to work because he has encountered the same issue dozens of times before?

Most people know the answer instinctively. The choice becomes even clearer when the experienced technician can explain not only what has gone wrong but why it has gone wrong. Knowledge can often provide an answer. Experience provides understanding.

This is not an argument against education, certifications, or younger professionals. Every expert begins as a beginner, and every experienced craftsperson was once an apprentice. The problem arises when we begin confusing evidence of learning with evidence of competence. A certificate may demonstrate that someone has completed a course. Apprenticeship demonstrates that someone has applied that knowledge under real conditions, solved real problems, made mistakes, and learned from them. For centuries, apprenticeship served as the bridge between theory and practice. It transformed information into judgement and knowledge into competence. That bridge is precisely what many societies began undervaluing when vocational education lost prestige.

The irony is that while many societies were encouraging young people toward universities, the labour market was quietly sending a different message. Skilled trades became harder to fill. Employers struggled to find welders, electricians, machinists, fabricators, technicians, and other skilled workers whose expertise could not be outsourced to software, imported from a spreadsheet, or generated by a presentation.

Perhaps no profession illustrates this better than welding. For generations, welding was viewed as a traditional male occupation. Yet in countries as different as the Philippines and New Zealand, women have increasingly entered the profession, challenging assumptions about both gender and vocational careers. Their success did not come from collecting certificates and displaying them on social media. It came from entering workshops, fabrication yards, shipyards, and industrial environments where knowledge is transferred through practice, repetition, mentorship, and experience.

A welder cannot learn welding exclusively from PowerPoint slides, and a fabricator cannot master fabrication through webinars. A skilled tradesperson develops competence by working beside someone who already possesses it. That principle once extended far beyond the trades. A junior accountant learned from a senior accountant. A young nurse learned from experienced nurses. A new manager learned from veteran managers. A child learned from parents and grandparents. Knowledge travelled through proximity.

Today, many of us learn differently. Faced with a problem, we search for a YouTube tutorial, an online course, a chatbot, or a discussion forum. Information has never been more accessible and answers arrive in seconds. Yet information is not the same as experience. When we learn from a person, we rarely receive information alone. We hear stories, ask questions, observe judgement, and learn how someone thinks. We absorb context as well as content. The lesson becomes a conversation rather than a transaction.

As information becomes easier to access, are we also changing the way we learn? More importantly, are we changing the way we relate to one another? If previous generations learned through dialogue, observation, and mentorship while newer generations increasingly learn through screens and search bars, the issue extends beyond education. It touches on how we socialise, seek guidance, build trust, and transfer wisdom.

The apprentice did not simply learn a skill. The apprentice learned how an experienced person approached a problem. That may be the most important distinction of all. Apprenticeship was never merely a training system. It was a transfer system. It transferred knowledge, judgement, habits, standards, confidence, perspective, and experience from one generation to the next.

When societies began treating vocational education as a lesser pathway, they did more than change educational priorities. They weakened one of the most effective mechanisms ever developed for transferring practical wisdom. The tragedy is not that apprenticeship disappeared. In many places, it remains alive and well. The tragedy is that we stopped recognising its value just as the world became more dependent on the very skills it produces.

Perhaps the real question is not whether apprenticeship still has a future. Perhaps the real question is whether a society can continue to value information while forgetting how wisdom is passed from one person to another.
