Nothingness in a Restless World

In a world obsessed with doing, achieving, and acquiring, the idea of nothingness can seem unsettling—something to avoid or fear. Yet in Zen: The Art of Simple Living, Japanese Zen monk Shunmyō Masuno turns this fear on its head. He writes:

Masuno reminds us that nothingness is not emptiness in the negative sense. It is the open space from which everything arises. It is pure possibility.

Our daily existence is saturated with noise, activity, movement, and materialism: phones buzz, calendars overflow, and rest is treated as laziness in many sectors. Sad, but true. We carry mental clutter like invisible weight, succumbing to the idea that we must carry the burdens around with us, and this includes endless thoughts, comparisons, worries, and desires. And yet, amidst all the noise, we lose sight of what really matters, the serenity of our soul.

Zen does not offer an escape from this. It offers a return. A return to simplicity. To awareness. To stillness. And most of all, to trust in the quiet power of nothingness. Shunmyō Masuno’s teachings are refreshingly grounded. He doesn’t demand you renounce the world. Instead, he gently suggests small daily shifts:

  • Clean your space as you clean your mind.
  • Greet each morning with intention.
  • Sit in silence, even if only for a few minutes.
  • Pause between tasks — not to scroll, but to breathe.

These are rituals of return. Each one brings us back to the vast, silent space within, where creativity, peace, and insight naturally bloom.

In Zen, stillness is not deadness. On the contrary, It is vibrant, alive, active, radiant. How can that possibly be? When we rest our minds, bodies, and spirits, we are not withdrawing from life—we are preparing to meet it more fully. Masuno’s message is simple: you don’t need more to become more. You need less. You need to stop. To sit. To breathe. To let go of the clutter that blocks your potential.

When you do, the truth becomes clear: you are already enough. And from this place of clarity, of nothingness, infinite possibilities open.
