3rd Sunday of Advent: Shedding Your Dead Layers

I bet you never expected to associate Advent with a lizard did you? No, I am not going all horror film on you so close to Christmas, don’t worry, but I do ask you to keep an open mind even though, probably like most of us reading this, you may not be be enamoured with lizards. If you started this series with me, then you know it is all part of the Advent journey of preparing your heart and soul for Christmas.

Fact: life is cyclical. Just as the snake and lizard instinctively sheds its old skin, revealing a fresh, renewed self (a process called moulting), we too are called to release what no longer serves us. This act of letting go is not just a physical or external change—it’s a soul-deep renewal that empowers us to step into our truest selves, unburdened by the weight of societal expectations or past versions of who we were.

The Power of Shedding: Releasing the Old

The lizard neither clings nor mourns its dead skin. There is no questioning its purpose or fearing the change. Instead, it trusts the process, allowing the shedding to reveal its vibrant, renewed self. This is what emotional moulting is all about:

  • Letting go of relationships that drain us.
  • Releasing self-doubt, fear, or old habits that limit growth.
  • Abandoning societal labels that don’t align with our inner truth.

Look back at the the last 12 months, or even 12 years if you prefer, and accept the fact that shedding is not an easy process and never will be. You will feel raw, exposed to vulnerabilities hidden for months or years. Trust the process. These layers—the expectations, judgments, and outdated beliefs—are not meant to stay forever. They served their purpose, but now, it’s time to step into a more authentic version of yourself.

The Rebirth of the Soul

Think of the daily sunsets, and be reminded that every ending is also a beginning. When we release the weight of the old, we create space for new perspectives, opportunities, and identities. This rebirth is the soul’s reminder that transformation is not only possible—it’s necessary.

Imagine yourself as an artist, standing before a blank canvas. Don’t be afraid to start over and reimagine the masterpiece of your life. Who do you want to become? What passions, dreams, or values will guide this new version of yourself? Rebirth isn’t about erasing who you were; on the contrary, it’s about integrating the lessons of the past while embracing the limitless possibilities of the present.

Empowerment Through Authenticity

In a world that often misunderstands, criticises, or labels those who dare to be different, it’s an act of courage to stay true to yourself. Society may try to box you into its expectations, but you are not defined by anyone else’s narrative. True empowerment lies in honouring your authenticity, even when it’s misunderstood or challenged.

  • Speak your truth: Share your voice, even if it shakes. Your story is uniquely yours, and no one else can tell it like you can.
  • Stand firm in your worth: You don’t need validation from others. Recognize your own value, and let that inner confidence guide you.
  • Embrace solitude when needed: Some parts of this journey may feel lonely, but solitude can also be a sacred space where clarity and strength are found.

Life’s journey isn’t about perfection; it’s about transformation. Like the snake, lizard, salamander, and frog, trust the cycles of your existence. Shed the dead layers, let your soul be reborn, and embrace new beginnings with open arms. Be unapologetically true to yourself, even when the world misunderstands you.

Celebrate the rebirth.

Live empowered.
