Smart Toilet Paper and the Right to Poop in Peace

On 2 August 2026, Article 50 of the European Union’s AI Act entered into force, strengthening transparency obligations for artificial intelligence systems. Together with the GDPR and the emerging European Digital Identity framework, the legislation reflects a consistent European philosophy: technology should serve people, not the other way round.

This makes the arrival of smart toilet paper an unexpectedly appropriate moment to ask a rather fundamental question.

Where exactly should digital innovation stop? My first encounter with “smart toilet paper” did not happen in a supermarket but in the middle of a television programme. Like so many advertisements these days, it interrupted whatever I was actually trying to watch. Suddenly the screen announced the arrival of Smart Soft toilet paper. I honestly thought I had misread it. Surely nobody had invented smart toilet paper? I actually rewound the recording to make sure my eyes had not deceived me.

My eyes had not deceived me. The “smart” innovation proved considerably less dramatic than I had imagined. Instead of artificial intelligence, sensors or Bluetooth connectivity, the novelty lay in the absence of the cardboard tube. The paper itself had become the core, reducing waste while fitting more sheets onto each roll. Clever? Absolutely. Revolutionary? Probably not.

Naturally, curiosity took over. While Swiss manufacturers were quietly eliminating cardboard tubes, researchers elsewhere were asking a far more ambitious question: what if toilet paper could diagnose disease?

At Harvard, a design engineering project explored precisely that idea. Disposable paper based biosensors could analyse the gut microbiome from faecal samples, allowing routine monitoring of digestive health from the comfort of one’s own bathroom. The objective was not technological novelty but earlier diagnosis, improved disease management and personalised medicine. Smart toilet paper no longer sounded quite so ridiculous.

Stanford dispensed with toilet paper altogether. Its prototype smart toilet continuously analyses urine and stool for biomarkers associated with conditions ranging from urinary infections to colorectal cancer. The logic is disarmingly simple. Everyone uses the toilet, so why not transform one of life’s most routine activities into preventative healthcare?

One practical problem remained. In a household of several people, how could the toilet distinguish one user’s health data from another’s? Stanford’s solution deserves permanent residence in the Museum of Scientific Understatement.

The toilet identifies users by their anal print. Yes, you read that correctly. Your eyes do not deceive you. I really did write anal print. The phrase is neither satire nor the product of an overactive imagination. Researchers concluded that the anatomical features surrounding the anus are sufficiently distinctive to function as a biometric identifier, rather like a fingerprint. The system converts those features into a digital signature rather than storing conventional photographs, allowing each bowel movement to be matched to the correct user while preserving privacy. Somewhere in California, a team of exceptionally bright engineers spent years perfecting anal biometrics in the service of human health. One cannot help admiring the science while simultaneously wondering whether civilisation has quietly wandered into the pages of a satirical novel.

The legal questions arrive almost immediately. Under the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, health information belongs to a specially protected category of personal data. Heart rate, blood pressure, genetic information and, yes, data derived from bowel movements all deserve enhanced protection. Suddenly, a whole new set of questions presents itself.

  • Who owns my poop once it becomes digital information?
  • Can my insurer ask for access to my bowel analytics?
  • May advertisers infer my dietary habits from my microbiome?
  • Could my employer offer wellness incentives based on digestive regularity?
  • Does yesterday’s stool become someone else’s intellectual property once it reaches the cloud?
  • Do we now need an EU Directive on the Protection of Faecal Privacy?

European citizens enjoy a legal right to be forgotten. Human beings have quietly exercised that right for centuries simply by flushing the toilet.

The bathroom of the near future may look rather different.

Ridiculous as the scenario sounds, the medical potential is genuine. Continuous monitoring of urine and stool could detect disease months before symptoms appear. Engineers may well save lives through technologies that today seem faintly absurd. History is full of inventions that were initially greeted with laughter.

A memory from my years as a development worker often comes back to me. During a visit to a modest farmhouse in the countryside, I asked the farmer where I might find the toilet. He looked at me, slightly puzzled by the question, broke into a broad grin, pointed towards the surrounding fields and replied, “Toilet? Take your pick.”

That exchange has stayed with me ever since. At the time, it was simply an amusing cultural moment. Today it feels almost philosophical. Billions of people still lack access to safe sanitation, while elsewhere we debate whether our toilets should upload stool consistency to the cloud and identify us through biometric anal recognition. Somewhere between “take your pick” and digital bowel analytics, humanity seems to have forgotten that progress and restraint are not opposites.

None of this is intended as criticism of engineers. Quite the opposite. Engineers gave us clean drinking water, sewerage systems, bridges, vaccines, MRI scanners, satellites and spacecraft. Civilisation owes them an enormous debt. Smart toilets that detect disease belong in that proud tradition because they address a genuine human need rather than creating an artificial one.

Engineering also requires judgement. The highest form of innovation is not making everything smarter; it is recognising when something is already smart enough. Not every object requires an app; not every human activity needs to generate data; not every quiet moment should become another source of analytics, cloud storage or subscription revenue.

The European Union is right to insist that technology should serve people, not the other way round. The AI Act, the European Digital Identity framework and the GDPR all spring from the same conviction: innovation without trust ultimately becomes self defeating. Preserving trust also means preserving boundaries, including a few places where efficiency, connectivity and data collection are not the highest values.

Privacy does not begin and end with smartphones, browsers or social media. Perhaps the last genuinely private space in modern life is the smallest room in the house.

If society is serious about protecting human dignity in the digital age, the next digital right is not another app, another algorithm or another regulation.

It is something much older, much simpler and infinitely more human : The right to poop in peace.
