The Gift of Emptiness

There was a time in my life when fasting was my go-to Lenten journey, but it never really brought me the peace that I sought, just the agony. About five years ago, inspired by the silent retreats I had been on in the past, I began digital “fasting” instead, and discovered that this the most gratifying spiritual and emotional detox that I could undertake with the best results.

My Lenten sacrifice for 2025 was fasting from social media and minimising my digital footprint. In this day and an age when all our lives are online in one way or another, taking several steps back to fade into the background takes a greater effort than you think, the magnitude of which you only become aware of once you embark on the journey.

The book Zen: The Art of Simple Living by Shunmyo Masuno is my new source of inspiration. I was blown away in the very first chapter with a single sentence that radically turned my daily and weekly perspective around. So in keeping with the spirit of Zen, I will keep the linguistic clutter to a minimum and leave with you with something to take on a walk or simply retreat from the noise around and within:

Try making time for emptiness, for not thinking about anything.
– Shunmyo Masuno

May the Easter light be with you.
