Don’t Quit*

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road your trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and its turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When they might have won, had they stuck it out.
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victors cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when your hardest hit,
It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit!

I am posting this wonderful prayer / inspiration more for myself than anyone else. This used to hang above my desk in Manila while I was in High School. It was a brand new blue poster bought from a local bookstore, and for some reason, the words haunted me from the very start.

Some days more difficult than others, and on the worst of days, when sit feels as though Life itself has betrayed me, the burdens begin to feel like suffering, I turn inwards and upward, clutching to my faith to fire on the flailing courage. The last stanza is always my golden thread:

Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when your hardest hit,
It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit!

A special dedication to my dearest friend Sylvia who arrived in Santiago de Compostela Monday evening, braving the walk, not quitting in spite of the challenges and temptations, and was shielded by her faith to soldier on. As I write this, she is now on her way to Fatima. She did not quit.
