Just Do Right (Maya Angelou)

the challenge
from the Magic of Oberschwaben series ©MTHerzog
“Just do right. Right may not be expedient, it may not be profitable, but it will satisfy your soul. It brings you the kind of protection that bodyguards can’t give you. So try to live your life in a way that you will not regret years of useless virtue and inertia and timidity.
Take up the battle.
Take it up.
It’s yours.
This is your life.
This is your world.”
I stumbled on these poignant words of Maya Angelou some time ago, but realise that as I grow older, and my life keeps taking so many different turns, they sink deeper and deeper into my soul.
Governments come and go, changing the course of history as they do, and leaving an imprint in each generation. The question always remains – have they done right? Did they they own up to their mistakes? Did they make a different in the people’s lives?
We go through the circle of life, birth, education, marriage, parenthood, retirement, old age, and somewhere along the way we get thrown a few stumbling blocks, not intended to make us weak, but for us to learn how to get up again and be stronger. How do we respond? Cower in fear? Hide behind artificial rage? Ignore the problem and hope it goes away on its own? Or do we face the storm head on and push on? The battle of life is exactly that – a battle. It was never meant to be easy, and requires careful planning and deep thought – but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the spontaneous moments and go wild from time to time.
Regardless of the stage in my life I find myself in, I have learned to carry a basket full of questions that help me evaluate whether what I am doing is right.
Will I be true to myself?
Will it uplift my soul?
Will I make a difference?
Will it change me?
Will I grow from it?
Will it hurt?
Will it make me strong?
Will I heal?
Will I overcome?
We all have our lives, but the challenge is to learn to truly live and “not regret years of useless virtue and inertia and timidity.
