Reflections on Winter Trees

For many photographers, the pursuit of the perfect solitary tree is a lifetime journey. I don’t like winter in Europe at all, but the barren trees are an absolute fascination. There is something magical about being alone on the search for that perfect tree. Summer trees are philosophical and poetic, but bare winter trees are the very definition of existentialism in its purest form.

While exploring the surrounding countryside outside of the Stuttgart area I narrowed the parameters to a solitary tree in an open field. It is not as easy as you think, because to find the right tree that forms a stark contrast with the background and is not swallowed by the shadows of a nearby forest.
