The Cherry Diaries: More Kittens

Dear Diary,

My apologies for not writing in sooner, but I’ve been busy. Yes! Can you imagine me, the grandmother of The Shire being busy with kittens? My last diary entry was about Caramela giving birth to her very first litter. Of the five kittens only one survived, and she has guarded that little ball of fur with a ferocity I cannot understand. Not too long after the fourth kitten crossed the rainbow bridge (all of them died of natural causes), Caramela moved the remaining kitten and went into hiding. I was absolutely heartbroken not being able to see the little one every day, but I had no idea where they moved to and didn’t want to impose. I was so depressed that I wouldn’t eat and didn’t even want to go out to play for two days! I just curled up on the chair and slept. Mommy was worried and spent most of her time cuddling me, and I let her.

While I wallowed in self-pity, my friend Warbles grew rounder and rounder, and one evening she frantically took up residence under the sofa and gave birth to four loud kittens! They are all as chatty as their mom and just as demanding. Like Caramela, Warbles is also a first-time mom, so it took her a few days to get the hang of things. She cleaned them all up quite nicely but when she would go out for a breath of fresh air, she completely forgot all about them and would make several rounds around the house until she remembered why she came inside in the first place.

Thank goodness I was around and Mommy provided us with the cosy cat bed under the sofa where we all fit together. Warbles and I kept the kittens warm and whenever she went out, I stayed behind to babysit. It was such a joy to have them snuggle up to me, I’ve never experienced this before. During those days I just left the nest for a quick bite to eat and a toilet run but otherwise I stuck by the babies for 10 days straight. Until Warbles moved them.

This litter is much healthier than Caramela’s ever was and so far all of them are alive and well. Maybe if Caramela and I were better acquainted and she had let me join her in the nest her brood would’ve survived, but we’ll never know. Anyhow, the little Warblers were transferred to Mommy’s bedroom of all places. It was a strange choice for Warbles and we thought she had chosen the space under the bed, but no, she had to go and select a drawer in the cabinet where I don’t fit at all! Hrmmph! Mommy complains that this lot likes to party between 22:00 – 01:00 but otherwise they are pretty quiet. They just opened their eyes a couple of days ago, but aren’t interested in the world outside the box just yet. Warbles has settled well into motherhood and no longer forgets where her children are.

In the meantime, we named Caramela’s kitten Toffee, and he is a cutie!

Life goes on and I got another bath. At least time Mommy had the courtesy of giving me shower this time and not drowning me under the kitchen sink tap. But I needed to warm up afterwards, even though I had a prolonged session with the hairdryer. Since she didn’t allow me to go outside, I did the next best thing and found a nice frying pan on the stove that was conveniently close to a window and placed in the sun. Mom flipped out because there was still oil in it (don’t worry, it was all cooled down) but I ended up with an oily butt, tail and hind legs. Ugh, another shower. I just can’t win them all at this age.

My eyesight is still pretty good, my hearing is immune to the noise outside or Mom’s music, but incontinence is a thing these days. Although I have three loos to choose from, I have more frequent accidents these days. I’m told that at 17 it is to be expected. So undignified though.

I think that pretty much sums it all for now. Ever since the kittens have been in the house Cheddar and Xico have kept their distance, so no hanky-panky stories to divulge there.

Meowingly yours,
Cherry
